PokerStars to Host Charity Tourney with Play Money Buy-in

  • Wed, 14 Mar 2018 16:30

Charitable initiatives have been a part of online poker for essentially as long as online poker has existed. Every so often – whether it is in response to a major tragedy or just because – online poker rooms host poker tournaments to raise money for charitable initiatives. PokerStars has been one of the leaders in charity tournaments, but for the first time, it will host one such tournament, but for a play money buy-in. The money going to Right to Play, though, is very real.

In an announcement made Tuesday, PokerStars said that it will make a $ 10 donation to Right to Play for the first 5,000 people who register for the event, with the goal of donating the full $ 50,000. The tournament will be held on April 6th, the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, at 20:00 EST. Buy-in is 1 million play money chips with unlimited re-buys and one add-on.

Everybody is given play money chips for free at PokerStars, but it takes some work to build a play money bankroll up to 1 million. That many chips is available for $ 5 for those who would rather not have to grind.

According to Right to Play’s website, the organization uses “the power of play to educate and empower children to overcome the effects of poverty, conflict and disease in disadvantaged communities.”

While food, water and shelter are essential, so is a childhood, complete with education and opportunities to actively engage with other children. There are areas of the world today where children are not able to experience the benefits of play–this is the problem that we must tackle.

Our educational games engage children to participate in our programs, while our Reflect-Connect-Apply approach encourages them to examine their experiences, relate those experiences to what they already know and apply that learning to their daily lives. This strategy helps children adopt and maintain lifelong healthy behaviours and attitudes.

Right to Play’s goals are to promote change in quality education, health practices, and peaceful communities.

Chris Moneymaker, Celina Lin, Barry Greenstein, Jake Cody, Aditya Agarwal and Fintan Hand, as well as Right To Play celebrity ambassadors.

“Right To Play is a charity close to my heart and I have seen first-hand the life-changing difference their educational programmes can make to children,” said PokerStars and Right To Play ambassador Fatima Moreira de Melo in Tuesday’s press release. “This tournament is such a great opportunity for players to be part of a landmark moment in Play Money history, with this being the first-ever multi-table tournament in aid of Right To Play, raising money for a well deserving cause.”

She will be playing in the tournament along with fellow PokerStars Ambassadors Barry Greenstein, Chris Moneymaker, Jake Cody, Celina Lin, Fintan Hand, and Aditya Agarwal.

Nikki Skipper, National Director for Right To Play UK, said, “We’re very grateful to our global partner, PokerStars, for delivering this exciting tournament to mark the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. It will help raise vital funds to help children in our programmes. It’s a fantastic initiative by PokerStars and will have a big impact on the lives of disadvantaged children around the world. We hope you will show your support for this tournament.”
