Paul Pogba 'can be replaced' at Manchester United – Former Red Devil reacts to transfer reports

  • Tue, 17 Apr 2018 17:25

Danny Higginbotham has revealed his frustrations with Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba, and admits the Frenchman is replaceable amid the doubt over his Old Trafford future.

Reports have claimed the £89million signing could be set to move on this summer, with manager Jose Mourinho ready to let him leave the club after a disappointing season.

The Red Devils boss is said to have run out of patience with the 25-year-old superstar after a run of fractious performances and has added him to a list of players to be put on the market.

Pogba, who was instrumental with two goals in a brilliant comeback win over Manchester City but then was poor as United lost to Premier League basement club West Brom, has recently been left on the bench or substituted in seven out of his last 11 games.

The rumours over his future also come amid claims the France international was offered to both Manchester City and Real Madrid in January.

Asked about Pogba’s fluctuating form and apparent uncertainty at Old Trafford, Higginbotham told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast:  “Pogba is frustrating, because we saw what he is capable of against Manchester City.

“Teams look to frustrate Manchester United. Teams sit back against them and then players like Pogba are forced to come looking for the ball. Pogba is a player who wants to get on the ball and make things happen.

“But I want to see him higher up the pitch. I don’t want to see him going towards the ball because I think his influence going forward is absolutely brilliant and we saw that against City with both the goals he scored.

“I think he gets frustrated at times because the build-up play from United is methodical, but only because teams are sitting back. Your top players then want to get involved so they go and drop deeper to make things happen.

“But Pogba is player you want in the final third, higher up the pitch, creating goals and scoring goals.

“He is an incredible talent and when you sign a player of that calibre and for that money, you have to play him in his best position. You can’t play him sitting in front of the defence.

“But Pogba needs to be more consistent. You know he’s got the ability, he is a world-class midfielder, but he just needs to get that consistency in his game.

“Could he be replaced if he leaves Manchester United? I hope Pogba doesn’t leave, I think he’s a fantastic player, but could he be replaced? Arguably, yes.”
